  • Richard DeWitte Sparkman has been in the private practice of law since 1979. His practice is limited to the United State Bankruptcy Court and appeals therefrom.

  • He practices both consumer and business bankruptcy law, and was board certified as a bankruptcy law specialist by the N.C. State Bar in the charter class of 1987, and was nationally certified as a business bankruptcy law specialist in 1994 by the American Board of Certification. Mr. Sparkman has also served as a Mediator for over 10 years, and was designated a NCDRC Certified Mediator - Superior Court in 2011.

  • Mr. Sparkman is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, The Trial Lawyer Honorary Society.

  • He previously served as Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Trustee for the Winston-Salem Division, Middle District of NC, and has been involved in thousands of bankruptcy cases since coming to the Eastern District of NC in 1979.

  • Mr. Sparkman regularly represents Chapter 7, 11, 12 and 13 debtors, creditors, and serves as a Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 bankruptcy trustee.

  • He is past Chair of the Bankruptcy Section for the North Carolina Bar Association; past member of the Bankruptcy Specialization Examination Committee; and the editorial staff of the North Carolina Bar Association Bankruptcy Practice manual.

  • He is a frequent lecturer at the NCBA Annual Bankruptcy Institute; Basic Bankruptcy Institute; and the Eastern Bankruptcy Law Institute.

  • He is author of "A Comprehensive Look at North Carolina Exemption Issues" and "I Don't Even Know How To Spell Bankrutpcy" published by the North Carolina Bar Association.

  • Mr. Sparkman is also a musician and entertainer, including performances during various Bar functions, at such places as the Grove Park Inn in Asheville; The Pinehurst Hotel, in Pinehurst; the Beach Cove Resort in Myrtle Beach, and The Greenbrier Resort, White Sulphur Springs, WV.
