- Richard DeWitte Sparkman has been in the private practice of law since 1979. His practice is limited to the United State Bankruptcy Court and appeals therefrom.
- He practices both consumer and business bankruptcy law, and was board certified as a bankruptcy law specialist by the N.C. State Bar in the charter class of 1987.
- He was nationally certified as a business bankruptcy law specialist in 1994 by the American Board of Certification. Mr. Sparkman has also served as a Mediator for over 10 years, and was designated a NCDRC Certified Mediator – Superior Court in 2011.
- Mr. Sparkman is included in the 2012 edition of The Best Lawyers in America and the 2012 edition of Business North Carolina Magazine’s Legal Elite.
- He has been included in the 2012 edition of Corporate Counsel’s Top Lawyers.

- He is a graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law and was Chief
Clerk to the Honorable Rufus W. Reynolds, Bankruptcy Judge for the Middle District of North Carolina, 1975-1977.
- He previously served as Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Trustee for the Winston-Salem
Division, Middle District of NC, and has been involved in thousands of bankruptcy cases
since coming to the Eastern District of NC in 1979.
- Mr. Sparkman regularly represents debtors, creditors, and bankruptcy trustees.
- He is past Chair of the Bankruptcy Section for the North Carolina Bar
Association; past member of the Bankruptcy Specialization Examination Committee;
and is currently on the editorial staff of the NCBA North Carolina Bankruptcy Practice manual.
- He is a frequent lecturer at the NCBA Annual Bankruptcy Institute; Basic
Bankruptcy Institute; NC Academy of Trial Lawyers; and the Eastern Bankruptcy
Law Institute.
- He is author of "A Comprehensive Look at North Carolina Exemption Issues"
published by the North Carolina Bar Association.
- Mr. Sparkman is also a musician and entertainer, including performances during various Bar functions, at such places as the Grove Park Inn in Asheville; The Pinehurst Hotel, in
Pinehurst; and the Beach Cove Resort in Myrtle Beach.
